CLT Mass Timber Twin Residential Towers
Situated at a prominent urban intersection in Taipei, the CLT Mass Timber Twin Residential Towers propose a new model for high-density living—one that reconsiders the relationship between architecture, nature, and the public realm. Rising from a richly landscaped ground plane, the paired towers challenge the anonymity often associated with contemporary residential development by introducing a distinct architectural identity rooted in material authenticity, environmental stewardship, and human-scaled urbanism.
The project is conceived as a dialogue between permanence and warmth. A robust concrete exoskeleton establishes the primary structural framework, expressing stability and longevity within the rapidly evolving cityscape. Nested within this frame is a carefully articulated mass timber structure, whose warmth and tactile qualities bring a sense of domesticity to the scale of the tower. This duality between concrete and timber creates an architecture that is simultaneously monumental and inviting, balancing the demands of urban density with the comfort of residential living.
Rather than treating the façade as a uniform exterior skin, the design transforms it into a layered inhabitable threshold. Deep horizontal timber elements and generous projecting terraces create a dynamic rhythm across the elevations, breaking down the perceived scale of the towers while generating depth, shadow, and visual richness. Floor-to-ceiling glazing spans between structural elements, maximizing natural light and establishing an uninterrupted connection between interior living spaces and the surrounding city. The result is a façade that continually changes throughout the day as sunlight, vegetation, and human activity animate its surfaces.
A defining feature of the project is the integration of landscape into the architectural framework. Planted terraces extend outward from the residences, creating a vertical network of gardens that soften the building’s presence while enhancing privacy, environmental performance, and resident well-being. Vegetation becomes an integral architectural component, blurring the distinction between building and landscape and introducing moments of nature throughout the vertical community.
At street level, the towers lift above a transparent and permeable podium designed to engage the city. Warm timber columns support expansive double-height spaces that dissolve the traditional boundary between private development and public life. A carefully choreographed sequence of reflecting pools, landscaped pathways, and gathering spaces extends inward from the sidewalk, inviting pedestrians into the site while establishing a calm counterpoint to the energy of the surrounding streets.
The composition of the twin towers further reinforces this civic ambition. Positioned to frame views and create a shared central open space, the buildings establish a sense of urban presence without overwhelming their context. The void between the towers becomes as important as the architecture itself, creating opportunities for light, air, landscape, and social interaction within a dense metropolitan environment.
Through its innovative use of mass timber construction, integrated landscape strategy, and commitment to enhancing the public realm, the project reimagines residential high-rise living for the contemporary city. The CLT Mass Timber Twin Residential Towers stand as an exploration of how sustainable materials, thoughtful urban design, and architectural expression can come together to create a more connected, humane, and environmentally responsive model for urban life.
